Tweet and Like Plugin

by Kurt on October 12, 2010

The Tweet & Like plugin adds Facebook Like button and Twitter button on your sites content. Whether you set it to appear on top or bottom on each content or you can choose both to appear it on top and bottom of your content. You can also add Tweet & Like buttons in your sidebar via widgets. You can set the style of each button (Facebook, Twitter) on the settings page. It also adds the capability to add AddThis Bookmarking Service along with Tweet & Like buttons.

Installation

  1. Upload `tweetandlike` folder to your WP plugin folder `/wp-content/plugins/` directory
  2. The path must look like this: `/wp-content/plugins/tweetandlike/`
  3. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
  4. You are ready, check the buttons on each post/page of your site.
  5. To make changes, go to Settings, Tweet & Like.

Screenshots

This is the general settings on Tweet & Like plugin. You can include AddThis Bookmarking Service and configure other settings.

Settings on both Facebook Like button and Twitter button. You can set how the button looks on the site.

The buttons appear on the your site depends on your configuration. This one is shown on post and appear just below the content.

This plugin is free and under the license GPLv2 Compatible. Feel free to download this plugin on http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tweet-like/.

Hi Kurt, I used your plugins in my wordpress site and I have one question though, how to use this settings in “Exclude” section “You can enter post/page ID (delimited by comma “,”) where you don’t want the buttons to show”

I put this url “http://localhost/mike/blog/?portfolio=photography”

It doesn’t work for me, it still there, could you give me example how to removed this plugin in some part of the page, because I just want to be only show this in my blog section.

I already changed the settings to display to “post” and it works, but in my porffolio section, its always there.

Thanks in advance =)

Kurt October 21, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Hi Mike,

The “Exclude” section accepts the post/page ID. You don’t need to use the exact URL as an input for the exclude section. Here is a video that show how to find the post/page ID and how to use it within the “Exclude” section.

Hi Kurt,

I already watched your video, the page id is not my concern, here’s the thing, I have this url “http://localhost/mike/blog/?portfolio=photography”

the only changes for my url is the value of portfolio, for example:

http://localhost/mike/blog/?portfolio=games
http://localhost/mike/blog/?portfolio=gadgets

I don’t have page id for that, so how can i exclude that type of url, I’m a newbie in wordpress, thanks!

btw, are you filipino? Im from manila =)

Kurt October 22, 2010 at 1:56 pm

Hi Mike,

The plugin uses the post/page ID to exclude the buttons on a specific page. If you are trying to view your portfolios that is not a post/page on Wordpress then you can’t exclude that page.

What do you mean when you say “I don’t have page id for that”? Did you create a custom html for your site?

Btw, I’m from Davao City. :)

Reply

mike October 22, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Yeah, it’s custom html, that’s why that part don’t have page id, anyway nice plugin bro, maraming salamat =)

Nice, lean plugin! I have one problem: I use thesis theme and would like to change filter, so I can position it somewhere else in de post instead of after content. Like:

remove_filter(‘the_content’, ‘tweetandlike’);
add_filter(‘thesis_hook_after_post’, ‘tweetandlike’);

If I try this, the plugin disapears. How can I use Thesis hooks with this plugin:?

Reply

Kurt October 26, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Hi Johan,

If you’re using Tweet & Like plugin along with Thesis theme you can’t hook tweetandllike to any available hooks in the theme. Tweet & Like uses the filter in wordpress. A filter use to accept a variable and return something while and action used to echo something.

Another thing,

add_filter(‘thesis_hook_after_post’, ‘tweetandlike’);

You should use “add_action()” instead of “add_filter()” in your code since “thesis_hook_after_post” belongs to hooks and not filters.

Johan October 26, 2010 at 9:46 pm

Okay…thanks for replying.

Is there a way to position your plugin after the tags in single post, whether with a workaround or hardcoding?

I’m trying and searching for days now…Hope you can lead me to the right direction.

Hi, very nice plugin!
My question is: Is there any way to exclude the plugin from the frontpage?
on every post that appears on the front page I can see the title and the word Tweet ( I assume that is where the tweet button would be placed).. on top and bottom (when it´s a very small post, let´s say 1 or 2 lines)..
Here is how it appears on frontpage:

One small problem: When you have “Show faces” ticked for the Facebook “like” feature, when you’re the first person to like something, your Facebook picture appears outside of the blue box. I hope that made sense ^_^

Hello Kurt,

First off amazing plug, exactly what I was looking for some while! :)
It works all fine and everything, however I was wondering how’d you configure your plugin so that it makes the buttons also appear on the frontpage at each single post, because atm it only shows the buttons when you click on the specific post/page.

Keep up the good work! :)

Reply

Kurt November 23, 2010 at 5:54 pm

Hi Adwiin,

Tweet & Like works on both front page & post page. When I say front page, it’s a static page the you’ve setup on “Reading” under “Settings” menu, and post page is where the list of post shows. Even if you stick on the default “Reading” settings on wordpress, still the buttons shows. The button should appear on each post on your home page.

Fantastic plugin mate.. .works like a charm. One thing though… when I installed it, all the ‘like’ counts are already set to 100K or something. Whilst this does suggest popularity It’s a big too much… is there any way I can wind them back to 0 or at least a much smaller number so i get more of an idea how many likes I’ve had?

Hope you can help

I have a problem. I use a plugin for having a page un a widget. I don’t want the page that shows in the widget to show the tweet ang Like plugin. So I exclude the page… but the page override the exclude.

Reply

Hi Christian,

I see your problem clearly. Tweet & Like exclude options works on single page. It means when you try to view the post/page, the exclude works, in your case, the page is in the widget. Tweet & Like can’t determine the page. I’ll try to work on this.

Hi,

Thanks for this great plugin, it was exactly what i was looking for.
Is there any way to set it up so that the like button doesn’t point to the individual posts, but to the main page (ex: http://www.comic-place.com/funhouse).

I know this is a bit of an unusual request as most people want the exact opposite, but i have a comic blog that is just at the beggining and having a single like counter for all pages will probably make it look a bit more popular right now than having a few “Likes” on each post.

After a while I would switch it back to its original form.

Thanks

I’d really like to use this plugin, but it doesn’t seem to work in Safari/Chrome/FF on mac.

FF/Safari: You hit the like button and it does post to the profile, yet the “comment” area is hidden and you only see a small arrow under “you”. When you enable thumbnails for Facebook, you then do see the comment box but the thumbnails hang down below the outer plugin container border.

Chrome: Again, with thumbnails enabled, you do see the ‘comment’ box (hidden if thumbs off). This time, mouseover on the comment box flickers when you move the mouse and you can’t attain focus on the box to type any comment.

Hi Kurt,

I like your plugin and use it on my website. I have a few suggestions for its development.

1) Include the new Facebook ‘Send’ button. You can find out more about that in the developers area on Facebook or on Mashable. This looks as though it can massively increase people’s willingness to share on Facebook since people know they won’t be sharing with their entire friend’s list on Facebook.

2) Have the ability to change the background colour (different for both top and bottom). For example, the top you might want as inconspicuous since your readers yas yet to read the content and the bottom to be prominent since they have hopefully enjoyed the content and need a prompt to remind.

Thanks,

Wayne

I noticed your tweet towards me a little whole ago on which I responded but didn’t got anything back! Anyways don’t worry about that. I was still left with a question regarding your plugin.

Thingy I was wondering how I can configure the tweet button so that when you hit it (on the frontpage) it’ll tweet the specific content of that post instead of my main website’s url and title. However the button does his job fine when you firstly click on the post and than hit the button from there.

So basically it’ll include the current’s page title which is fine, but does grab the main website url when you tweet from the frontpage (unlike on the page of that certain post) Is there a way to fix this?

@Wayne Whom commented above me. Excellent suggestion on that second one!

Kurt,

I really like this plugin. I have it installed for a couple of months now and seems that it has stopped counting Tweets (not sure about likes). When my scheduled post goes live, i visit the post and tweet it. The tweet count doesnt increase. Any ideas? I did update wordpress a week or so back and wonder if the plugin might not be compatible or something. Any ideas?

Kurt May 16, 2011 at 2:33 pm

Hi Sam,

Did you do the tweet on single pages? I’ll probably check why is the tweet stopped counting. It counts on my posts.

Great plugin! Instead of at the head of the article, I would like to have the small buttons on the same line as the byline, but aligned to the right. How can I accomplish this?

Reply

Kurt May 16, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Hi Hooch,

You have to do an edit on the plugin. Try to add the buttons where you want it to be placed.
I’ll update the plugin in a couple of days that supports shortcodes. Probably that will help you.

Thanks!

Reply

HI John,

You can add it via Widgets under Appearance menu on sidebar. Just drag the widget on your sidebar and the buttons will show.

Toni May 19, 2011 at 7:33 pm

@Mauricio:

Try editing tweetandlike.php. Search for:
$add_taf = ( ((is_page() || is_single() || is_home()) && $display_in_both)

and change it into:
$add_taf = ( ((is_page() || is_single() || is_archive() || is_search() || is_feed() || is_home()) && $display_in_both)

This will make the buttons show up on the category and search pages.

Is there any bug when working on WP v.3.1.2? I noticed my FaceBook button is working perfectly, but TWEET counter is not counting any tweet. Maybe someone else is dealing with the same issue.

Kurt, I love the Tweet and Like plugin! If you could add Google +1, that would make it even more awesome. I don’t think we need more than these three, quite frankly. The other sharing sites are becoming less and less important.

Tweets, Likes and +1 are pretty much the only buttons that matter now.

Reply

Mark June 9, 2011 at 1:57 am

Hi – is there a way to remove google +1? Part of the reason I loved the plug-in was the simple elegance of the two buttons, Tweet and Like. Does anyone know how to have the ability to switch this off as it’s ruined the layout on my page?

Reply

Kurt June 9, 2011 at 2:33 am

Hi Mark,

I just updated the plugin again and added an option to include/exclude the button.
Try to see the Google +1 Settings on the plugin settings page.

Dan June 9, 2011 at 2:00 am

Love the plugin, but the new update causes a conflict with Google Adsense, and the ads won’t display. (I use AdRotate to display Google Adsense, if that helps.) I had no problems at all before the update today.

Hi Kurt
I’ve tried at least 6 FB Like button plug ins and I like yours the best since it also combines the Tweet button. Great 2 for 1 plug in.

Having 2 problems.
1) As of version 1.2.1 – the Like button does not show anywhere on the blog

2) As of previous version – the Like button would post a random thumbnail image to FB instead of the featured image. I tried several Open Graph Meta plug ins for WP plus the Facebook-Like-Thumbnail plug-in but with no luck. From my research, this is a coding issue with header.php, functions.php, Open Graph Met property tags, and iframe verses XFBML version of the Like button.

Who do I get the Like button back? How do I get the Like button to post the Featured Image as the thumbnail?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Jay

Kurt, thanks for all your efforts to get the Tweets and Likes plugin working. It is now showing Google +1 in Firefox/Mozilla, however it would be nice if the three buttons (Tweet, Like, +1) were all in a row across the bottom. Right now, the Like button ends up below the Tweet button, and it doesn’t look very neat and clean. It would be nice if you could figure out a way to space them evenly across the bottom like this:

Tweet Like +1 (with 5 spaces or so between each, all on one line)

Thanks for your help!

Hi Jeff,

What is the url of the site? As you can see the Tweet & Like buttons are showing in a line on my site.
Try to adjust the width in Facebook settings to lower than 350. That my fix the issue.

Reply

Jeff June 12, 2011 at 11:22 pm

Kurt, the url is http://www.weightlossexercisediet.com/

I tried changing the width in Facebook settings to 300, but it didn’t seem to help.

As you can see, the Google +1 button is too large and pushes the Facebook Like button down to the next line. I would like them to all be in a row, and I also tried to set the Google +1 button to the smallest size (15 px), but it keeps defaulting back to the standard size of 24 px. The 15 px would be ideal for this layout, so that all the buttons are the same size.

Alternatively, would it be possible to do this with shortcode (for all 3 buttons)?

Does anyone else have an issue with the updated version of this plugin (1.2.3) and IE9? It is really strange for me. When viewing my site with IE9 and the plugin enabled, everything works fine for about five minutes. Then all of a sudden my page formatting goes berzerk (the side bar appears underneath my comments). I don’t have the issue in Safari, Firefox, or Chrome. Any ideas?

Dan, I had exactly the same issue and had to de-activate the plugin. I hope Kurt is working on a way to make XFMBL optional rather than mandatory? For those of us who aren’t computer experts, it’s very difficult to make the code changes so that our sites will render properly in Internet Explorer.

Kurt, any update in this regard? And will you be able to also address the issue of having the three buttons along the bottom in a nice clean row?

Really appreciate your efforts and LOVE the potential for this plugin!

Until the latest update I was using it for posts, portfolio posts and on the FrontPage as a sidebar widget.
However, the widget disappeared. I can’t seem to find it anymore. Was that functionality discontinued? Would be a shame.

tom

Reply

Jeff June 16, 2011 at 9:14 am

I agree with tom on this issue as well – the sidebar widget is a nice feature, especially with Wordpress mu sites (blogs with multiple members), because that way the administrator doesn’t have to adjust the settings for Tweet and Like on a case-by-case basis. Just put the widget in the sidebar and you’re good to go.

I have recommended this plugin to several Wordpress mu site administrators, and I am now concerned that they will stop using it if the sidebar functionality has been discontinued.

Kurt, any comment on this issue?

You can click it but it does not remain clicked and it does not count the clicks. You can try it on my website: http://www.podriaserpeor.com/ . This is very strange, because it actually tries to publish on the facebook profile, but it actually “unclicks” and does nothing.

I too am seeing this issue.

If you go to the main page of my website, you can see that the Twitter and Facebook buttons have the correct count for the specific post. However, the Google + button seems to be tied to the main URL vs. the Post. So all posts on the front page will show the same G+ counts.

If you click on a post, you will see that the G+ count is different than the front page count.

Hi,

Thanks for the plug-in.
I think you have a bug there in the google+ feature. It seems that when you choose the buttons to appear on the front page of the blog, if someone +1s one of the posts in the front page, it counts this +1 for all the posts in the front page, or at least it is displayed as such. I think it probably counts this +1 as a +1 for the frontpage, because if you actually click into one of the posts, you see that the +1 clicks is equal to 0.
Is this making any sense?
